Golf can be an easy addition to a Western Montana group itinerary, especially when there’s a free afternoon or a choice of activities built into the schedule. From small-town courses to championship layouts and resort golf, courses throughout the region pair an enjoyable round with mountain, valley and river views. And travelers don’t need to bring their own equipment; most local courses (including the ones in this blog post) offer club and cart rentals, making it easy for an individual golfer or a foursome to fit in a round while exploring Western Montana. Our typical golf season in Montana runs from early May through mid-October. 

Golfing in Western Montana is a great option for a free afternoon.

Glacier National Park Surrounding Area

For groups spending time near Glacier National Park, golfers can choose from nearby courses in Columbia Falls and West Glacier. Meadow Lake Golf Course in Columbia Falls is an 18-hole championship course set against the backdrop of the surrounding mountains. The course has earned national recognition, including a 4.5-star rating from Golf Digest.

Closer to the park, Glacier View Golf Course in West Glacier offers 18 holes along the Middle Fork of the Flathead River, with mountain and forest views throughout the course. Its location near Glacier National Park makes it an easy option for golfers looking to play a round during free time while staying in the West Glacier area.

On the east side of Glacier National Park, Glacier Park Lodge Golf Course provides a golf option for travelers staying in or passing through East Glacier Park. Located on the Blackfeet Reservation, the historic nine-hole course is Montana’s oldest grass-greens golf course. Each hole is named for a former Blackfeet chief, adding a connection to the history of the area while golfers take in views of the surrounding landscape.

Kalispell + Whitefish

In Kalispell, Buffalo Hill Golf Club offers 27 holes, including an 18-hole championship course and the nine-hole Cameron Course. Tree-lined fairways, the Stillwater River and views across the Flathead Valley give golfers a scenic introduction to the area, while the choice between nine and 18 holes provides flexibility depending on the amount of free time built into the itinerary.

Also in Kalispell, Northern Pines Golf Club offers an 18-hole course with two distinctly different settings. The front nine features rolling, links-style terrain, while the back nine follows the Stillwater River through elevation changes and a more wooded landscape.

The Whitefish Lake Golf Club offers two 18-hole courses, North and South, just minutes from downtown Whitefish. The club also offers a twilight rate on the South Course, providing a discounted option for itineraries with activities planned earlier in the day.

Golfers can rent clubs and carts at most golf courses.

Missoula + Bitterroot Valley

Groups spending time in Missoula have a few golf options close to the city. Larchmont Golf Course, located near Fort Missoula, is an 18-hole championship course with mountain views, large greens and a relatively flat, walkable layout.

On the east side of Missoula, Canyon River Golf Club offers an 18-hole, par-72 course that winds through native grasslands and ponderosa pines, with lakes and riparian areas coming into play throughout the course. Canyon River is also just 10 minutes from downtown Missoula, making either course an easy option during a free afternoon.

South of Missoula, two noteworthy courses make it easy to add golf to an itinerary traveling through the Bitterroot Valley. In Stevensville, Whitetail Golf Course is located within the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge, where golfers may spot waterfowl and deer while playing the nine-hole course. Continuing south on U.S. Highway 93, Hamilton Golf Course offers 18 holes with views of the Bitterroot Mountains and is conveniently located near downtown Hamilton.

For itineraries that venture beyond Western Montana’s primary travel hubs, several courses offer an easy way to add a round of golf along the way.

  • Eureka, Indian Springs Ranch: Play an 18-hole, links-style championship course surrounded by the wide-open landscape of the Tobacco Valley.
  • Frenchtown, King Ranch Golf Course: Located 10 miles west of Missoula, this 18-hole course features wide fairways and scenic views along the Clark Fork River.
  • Libby, Cabinet View Golf Club: An 18-hole course with expansive views of Libby’s namesake Cabinet Mountains.
  • Plains, Wild Horse Plains Golf Course: This relaxed nine-hole community course offers a small-town Montana golf experience.
  • Polson, Polson Bay Golf Course: This 27-hole course at the southern end of Flathead Lake features lakeside fairways with views of the Mission Mountains.
  • Seeley Lake, Double Arrow Golf Course: Play 18 holes among ponderosa pines with the Swan and Mission mountains as the backdrop.
  • Thompson Falls, Rivers Bend Golf Course: A nine-hole course with a unique layout that brings golfers back to the clubhouse every third hole.
