Swan Mountain Outfitters offers a wide range of outdoor experiences near Glacier National Park, from guided horseback rides and fishing to snowmobiling adventures. For groups looking to experience Western Montana in a truly unique way, llama trekking stands out as an unforgettable soft-adventure option. Swan Mountain Llama Trekking invites visitors to explore the forests and mountain trails of the Seeley Swan Valley—just a short distance from Glacier National Park—alongside these gentle, sure-footed companions affectionately known as the “Camels of the Clouds.”
Swan Mountain Llama Trekking offers outings for both novice and experienced hikers, including llama packing clinics, from June 1 through mid-October. The popular half-day trek is ideal for groups or FIT clients seeking a soft-adventure experience that blends activity and relaxation. Guests can choose to lead their own llama, hike alongside one or simply enjoy the company as guides manage the animals along the trail. The moderate 4.6-mile round-trip hike gains 800 feet in elevation en route to Bond Falls, a scenic waterfall that makes a perfect lunch stop. Guides prepare a creek-side picnic featuring a spread of deli meats, cheeses, fresh vegetables, fruit and snacks. On warm summer days, some hikers even take a refreshing dip in the cool waters of the natural swimming hole before trekking back to the trailhead in the early afternoon.
Here’s a look at our trek and what groups can expect from this one-of-a-kind experience in Western Montana.

We met up with our guides at the trailhead and were assigned our llamas. Our guide explained how to trek with a llama and why they are such great companions to have on trips into the mountains and woods—from their agility to their acute sense of danger.

Every llama had a lead rope and just walked along behind each of us. Our lead llama, Robusto, carried our lunch to a beautiful waterfall destination in the Swan Mountains.

We all had a great time bonding with our new friends.

Every once in a while, we stopped for a water or picture break, and the llamas munched on vegetation in the woods.

Once we got to our lunch destination, we all rested and ate.

After we ate our lunch, the llamas got treats. Look at those ears of anticipation!

We hiked back and took our end-of-the-trail photos.

The llamas are used to the cameras and had fun posing. Goodbye, from Robusto.
Llama trekking is an all-around enjoyable experience that combines Montana’s scenic beauty with a sense of calm and connection to nature. It’s an easy addition to a group itinerary and an especially good fit for FIT travelers seeking a soft-adventure outing with a unique twist. Swan Mountain Llama Trekking offers a variety of options and can also help customize experiences to suit the interests and schedules of different groups.
